So close to heaven

The former Benedictine monastery of St. Michael is located on one of Bamberg’s seven hills, the Michaelsberg. Following its closure in 2012, the former abbey church—with its famous “Heavenly Garden”—will once again be open to the public starting May 1, 2026, from Friday through Sunday and on holidays, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Friday to Sunday, and public holidays from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm

Admission is free

from 1 May 2026 onwards

Guided tours of the reopened church

Guided tours of the reopened St Michael’s Church can be booked from now on; these will be held regularly by BAMBERG Tourism & Congress Service from 1 May 2026.

May to October: 

Fridays from 3.00 pm, Saturdays from 11.00 am
