Purpose of the foundation
The Bamberg Citizens' Hospital Foundation is a non-profit foundation. It is administered by the city of Bamberg. The purpose of the Citizens' Hospital Foundation is to provide assistance to the elderly.
From the very beginning, the Bürgerspital was a place for people in the autumn of their lives. However, the precursors to the Bürgerspital, the Katharinen- and Elisabethenspital, provided general assistance to the elderly, the needy, and the sick. Today's foundation purpose of caring for the elderly is realized through the maintenance and operation of the “Bürgerspital” retirement home on Michaelsberg.
The admission criteria are laid down in the statutes. The retirement home provides “elderly people who have generally reached the age of 60 and live in Bamberg or are or were connected to the city of Bamberg through birth, professional practice, or in any other way, with not only temporary accommodation, care, and nursing when living at home is no longer possible or appropriate.” Today, the Bürgerspital exclusively offers assisted living for seniors, while nursing care for the elderly is provided in the neighboring Antonistift retirement home.
Until the 20th century, the residents were cared for by the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. Today, elderly care is provided by the Bamberg Social Foundation. To this end, the Bürgerspitalstiftung (Citizens' Hospital Foundation) has handed over the buildings of the former St. Michael monastery (convent building) to the Bamberg Social Foundation.
